New Media Design

New Media Design was my second course of the program, and I was very excited to learn. I felt like this course would allow me to tap more into my creative space in a different way compared to New Media Production.

I learned the basics of Photoshop during my undergraduate career in classes and while I worked for my campus newspaper. However, I had not used it much since then. It was fun to revisit the application and even discover more capabilities than I ever knew before.

My favorite project from this course was the vintage postcard (pictured above). I woke up before sunrise and found photo-worthy areas in my community. Of course, there were improvements that could have been made, but I was so proud of the creation process from start to finish.

Illustrator, however, was another one of those Adobe applications that I knew about prior to taking this course. I just never used it for myself. Like Photoshop, there is so much you can do with this application. LinkedIn Learning definitely help me prepare when developing my own project. Paired with Photoshop, I was able create the style guide for this very website and logos.

Group projects can either be the best thing ever or the bane of your existence. It can be complicated when you have so many different contributing ideas and opinions. However, group projects are necessary, even in the real world. They teach you how to make important decisions and build teamwork skills. I am so grateful for the team I was able to work with for not only one, but two projects for this course.

And then there’s Figma. I had never heard of Figma, let alone the word Figma, before in my life – until I took New Media Design. I was fascinated by the possibilities it held. I always wondered how digital developers the very things that we utilize every day, and with Figma, I now know.

This course covers some of the basics for developing the final Capstone project, like mobile app, website or style guide. This course holds the tools for a multi-faceted individual in the workforce.
