Featured Writing: ‘Lester Wolff celebrates 99th birthday’

January 2018

Role: Interviewer, Writer, Editor

Project Overview

When I first interviewed for Civil Air Patrol News, I was interested in a different position. I didn’t receive it. They chose someone else for that position, but saw my potential as a writer. They were impressed with my work during my undergraduate career, and wanted to give me a chance. This article was my first published story for Civil Air Patrol News as a freelance writer, and it was an honor to interview Lester Wolff.

Challenges

Before beginning my freelance work for CAP News, I had a little prior experience working with the Air Force. I had a job (internship) where I worked for Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base for two summers. However, I didn’t know much about the Civil Air Patrol until I applied. Because of this, I had to do a lot of research about the organization , as well as Lester Wolff, before I scheduled my interview. Luckily, my editor offered contacts for other sources for the story, which is where I began my process. After interviewing my other sources, I found my hardest challenge was getting in contact with Mr. Wolff, himself. After not receiving an email response to scheduling the interview, I quickly realized I would have to dive in and just call him. Before doing so, I had my interview questions prepared and my computer ready for notes. When Mr. Wolff did answer, he had difficulties hearing my questions and remembering his time with CAP.

Results

The final result of this project is my absolute favorite. I’m still so honored to have the opportunity to not only write about but also talk to a person who has made such a huge impact in the both the political and military world. This story lands in my top-5 memorable projects to this day.
